About Barrett-Jackson

Barrett-Jackson was founded in 1971 by Russ Jackson and Tom Barrett and is based in Scottsdale, Arizona. Its January Scottsdale sale is a week-long event that draws large crowds and TV coverage. It also holds sales in other U.S. cities such as Palm Beach and Las Vegas.

Cars cross a stage one at a time in a live auction, and most are offered with no reserve. Bidders register for each event by buying a bidder package and showing proof that they can pay. Bidding is open on site, online, by phone and through a representative. Automobilia is sold in separate sessions.

What Barrett-Jackson sells

How buying works at Barrett-Jackson

  1. Make an accountCreate an account and choose the auction you plan to attend.
  2. Buy a bidder packagePay the non-refundable registration fee for that event. Early registration costs less, and packages include passes for you and a guest.
  3. Show fundsGive a bank letter, a credit pre-approval, or a deposit of 10% of your bid limit. Proof of vehicle insurance is also required.
  4. BidBid on site, online, by phone or through a representative. Remote bids pay a higher buyer's premium.
  5. Pay and collectPay on the day of sale at the auction office, then remove the car by the event deadline or ship it with an on-site carrier.

What it costs

Barrett-Jackson does not post a public fee table; these numbers come from its own 2022 bidder agreement, the latest one we could read.

WhatCost
Buyer's premium, vehicles bought on site (2022)10% of the hammer price
Buyer's premium, phone, internet or proxy (2022)12% of the hammer price
Automobilia premium (2022)15% on site, 17% remote
Unsettled-account penalty (2022)Extra 2% on the premium if you leave without settling
Tier 1 bidder package, Scottsdale 2022$500 early, $650 after the early deadline
Tier 2 bidder package, Scottsdale 2022$350 early, $450 after the early deadline
Extra guest pass (2022)$275 per person
Bid limit deposit (2022)At least $9,000 by cashier's check or wire, for a $90,000 limit
Bank letter or credit pre-approval (2022)At least $30,000
Property not removed (2022)Handling charge of 1% of the price per month, with a 5% minimum after 60 days

A worked example using the 2022 rates: a $40,000 car bought on site adds a $4,000 premium, so it costs $44,000 plus the bidder package, tax, title and shipping. Bought online, the premium is $4,800, for $44,800.
