Before you bid
- Count the fees. Most auctions add a buyer’s premium to the winning bid, and some add document or gate fees. Check each site’s terms before you bid.
- Inspect or have it inspected. Many sales allow previews. Our inspectors directory lists companies that will look at a vehicle for you.
- Check the VIN. Run a free UX Vehicle History Report on any 17-character VIN before you bid.
- Know the title. Read whether the vehicle comes with a clean, salvage or bill-of-sale title, and what your state needs to register it.
- Plan pickup or shipping. Most auctions give you only a few days to remove what you buy. Line up a shipper before the auction ends.
