Furniture & Household auctions: what the numbers say

There are 3,272 furniture & household auctions open right now across 44 states, with the most in California (210), Ohio (163), Virginia (149), North Carolina (129) and Texas (118). Most of them are on Proxibid, GovDeals and Public Surplus. The biggest sellers at the moment are Fairfax County, Department of Medicine and Surgery, Western Kentucky University and Cleveland State University. The next to close is Newport RS2000 10ft x 5ft Optical Table at $120.

Over the past year the UX Search sold archive recorded 1,293 closed furniture & household sales, with a middle hammer price of $25 and a range from $1 to $59,000. By state, Nebraska ran about $12 (200 sales), Virginia ran about $10 (140 sales) and Tennessee ran about $42 (89 sales). The buyer's premium, sales tax and pickup are on top of the hammer price, and each sale on this page links to the listing it came from.

Prices at government auction follow the seller, not the item: a state fleet that serviced a truck on schedule sells it for more than a county that ran it into the ground, and a sale that closes at 2 PM on a Tuesday draws fewer bidders than one that closes Sunday night. The listing's photos, the seller's name and the location tell you most of what you need; the sold prices on this page tell you the rest.

Home and office furniture and appliances sell at estate, returns and government surplus auctions. These are the sites that sell them.

Office furniture is the most common thing a government sells. Every renovation and every move puts desks, task chairs, conference tables, filing cabinets, cubicle systems and shelving into surplus, usually in lots, and the condition is often better than the price suggests because commercial furniture is built for years of daily use. Schools sell student desks and cafeteria tables by the dozen; hospitals and universities sell beds, lounge seating and lab benches.

Household furniture and appliances are rarer at government auction but do appear from seized-property sales and from housing programs. Nearly every furniture sale is pickup only within a short window, so the truck, the helpers and the distance to the warehouse are part of the price. Our sold prices below show what desks, chairs and cabinets really went for.

Before you bid

  • Measure and plan pickup. Large items need a truck and helpers, and most sales are pickup only.
  • Read the condition report. Ask for one if it isn’t posted. Photos don’t always show repairs, restoration or damage.
