Boat & Yacht auctions: what the numbers say

There are 409 boat & yacht auctions open right now across 29 states, with the most in North Carolina (34), Georgia (11), Texas (10), Virginia (10) and Ohio (9). Most of them are on Proxibid, GovDeals and Ritchie Bros.. The biggest sellers at the moment are Geauga County Park District, State of Arkansas, Middlesex County and University of New Mexico. The next to close is Zodiac Boat with Trailer at $1,425.

Over the past year the UX Search sold archive recorded 678 closed boat & yacht sales, with a middle hammer price of $875 and a range from $1 to $800,000. By state, Tennessee ran about $1,125 (54 sales), Florida ran about $3,661 (41 sales) and Ohio ran about $310 (41 sales). The buyer's premium, sales tax and pickup are on top of the hammer price, and each sale on this page links to the listing it came from.

Prices at government auction follow the seller, not the item: a state fleet that serviced a truck on schedule sells it for more than a county that ran it into the ground, and a sale that closes at 2 PM on a Tuesday draws fewer bidders than one that closes Sunday night. The listing's photos, the seller's name and the location tell you most of what you need; the sold prices on this page tell you the rest.

Before you bid

  • Get a marine survey. For larger boats, a survey before you bid is worth the cost.
  • Check the hull ID and title. Make sure the hull ID matches the paperwork and that the boat can be titled in your state.
  • Count the fees. Most auctions add a buyer’s premium to the winning bid, and some add document or gate fees. Check each site’s terms before you bid.
  • Plan pickup or shipping. Most auctions give you only a few days to remove what you buy. Line up a shipper before the auction ends.
