Medical, Dental & Lab Equipment auctions: what the numbers say

There are 170 medical, dental & lab equipment auctions open right now across 30 states, with the most in New Jersey (15), Pennsylvania (11), Virginia (9), Washington (8) and California (7). Most of them are on GovDeals, Proxibid and GSA Auctions. The biggest sellers at the moment are Department of Medicine and Surgery, State of Washington Surplus Operations, Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority and Alamance Community College. The next to close is BRAND NEW EMT EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN PARAMEDIC BADGE - CHOICE OF GOLD OR S at $10.

Over the past year the UX Search sold archive recorded 449 closed medical, dental & lab equipment sales, with a middle hammer price of $4,150 and a range from $1 to $86,000. By state, Ohio ran about $6,100 (37 sales), Washington ran about $3,775 (34 sales) and New Jersey ran about $2,644 (30 sales). The buyer's premium, sales tax and pickup are on top of the hammer price, and each sale on this page links to the listing it came from.

Prices at government auction follow the seller, not the item: a state fleet that serviced a truck on schedule sells it for more than a county that ran it into the ground, and a sale that closes at 2 PM on a Tuesday draws fewer bidders than one that closes Sunday night. The listing's photos, the seller's name and the location tell you most of what you need; the sold prices on this page tell you the rest.

Hospitals, clinics, labs and drug makers sell surplus equipment at auction, from exam tables and dental chairs to centrifuges and imaging systems. These are the sites that sell it.

Hospitals run by the VA, states, counties and universities replace equipment on a schedule and send the old units to surplus: exam tables, hospital beds, wheelchairs, stretchers, patient monitors, infusion pumps, autoclaves, dental chairs and lab instruments such as centrifuges and microscopes. Ambulances and medical vans are sold with the vehicles. Much of it is sold in lots to resellers and to clinics abroad, and much of it is still serviceable.

Buyers should know that regulated devices may need recertification before clinical use, that imaging equipment such as X-ray units can carry disposal rules of its own, and that most lots are sold as is without a working guarantee. Our live listings and sold prices below cover the medical and lab equipment in the government auction index right now.

Auction sites for medical & scientific equipment

UX Search links to these auction sites and is not affiliated with them. Bidding, payment and pickup happen on each site, under its own rules.

Before you bid

  • Check certification needs. Some medical devices need servicing or certification before clinical use.
  • Count the fees. Buyer’s premiums and documentation fees vary by auction. Check each site’s terms before you bid.
  • Plan the haul. Heavy equipment may need a permit load and a lowboy. Get a shipping quote before you bid.
