Government Surplus auctions: what the numbers say

There are 80,187 government surplus auctions open right now across 50 states, with the most in Missouri (9,856), Pennsylvania (5,236), Texas (3,685), California (3,447) and Florida (2,365). Most of them are on Proxibid, GovDeals and St. Louis LRA. The biggest sellers at the moment are St. Louis Land Reutilization Authority, City of Pittsburgh, City of Chicago (Planning and Development) and Department of Medicine and Surgery. The next to close is (Tampa, FL) 2021 RAM 1500 Classic (1636287 ) at $17,500.

Over the past year the UX Search sold archive recorded 63,049 closed government surplus sales, with a middle hammer price of $3,270 and a range from $1 to $800,000. By state, California ran about $3,440 (3,980 sales), Florida ran about $6,600 (3,777 sales) and Georgia ran about $1,600 (3,595 sales). The buyer's premium, sales tax and pickup are on top of the hammer price, and each sale on this page links to the listing it came from.

Prices at government auction follow the seller, not the item: a state fleet that serviced a truck on schedule sells it for more than a county that ran it into the ground, and a sale that closes at 2 PM on a Tuesday draws fewer bidders than one that closes Sunday night. The listing's photos, the seller's name and the location tell you most of what you need; the sold prices on this page tell you the rest.

Before you bid

  • Everything is sold as-is. Government sellers rarely guarantee condition. Read the description closely and inspect when you can.
  • Know the pickup rules. Most government sales give you a short window to remove items, and you load them yourself.
  • Count the fees. Some government platforms add a buyer’s premium; others don’t. Check each listing.
  • Watch closing times. Many government auctions extend when bids come in at the last minute.
