U.S. Marshals asset sales
The U.S. Marshals Service manages and sells property forfeited to the government under the Justice Department's asset forfeiture program, created in 1984. Assets include homes and other real estate; vehicles, boats and aircraft; jewelry, watches, precious metals and art; and intangible assets such as virtual currency and domain names.
The Marshals Service does not run its own auction site. Its asset forfeiture page lists the outside companies currently selling for it.
How buying works
- Personal property is sold at hundreds of online and live public auctions each year, run by contracted auction companies. The listed sellers include companies for general merchandise, vehicles, aircraft and yachts, and bidding follows each company's own rules.
- Real estate is listed with licensed brokers at fair market value and advertised on major home-listing sites and on RealLook.com, run by the Marshals' real property contractor.
- Proceeds fund the program and help compensate crime victims and support law enforcement.
