FCC Spectrum Auctions
The Federal Communications Commission auctions licenses to use the electromagnetic spectrum, and has done so since 1994. Congress gave it auction authority in 1993 to choose among competing applications for initial licenses, replacing the earlier use of comparative hearings and lotteries. Auctions are now required for competing initial license applications, with exemptions such as public safety radio services and noncommercial educational and public broadcast stations.
How buying works
- Who can bid: any eligible company or individual, but only after submitting an application and an upfront payment and being found qualified by the Commission.
- Bidding: auctions run electronically over the internet through the FCC's browser-based Auctions Bidding System, so qualified bidders can take part from a home or office.
- Following an auction: anyone with a web browser can track an auction's progress and see the results of each round.
