How buying works
- Registering: bidders create an account and provide government-issued photo ID; a bank reference may be needed to raise a bid limit.
- Ways to bid: live online with streaming video, by telephone (lots with a low estimate of at least $2,000, arranged before sale day), by absentee maximum bid, or in the saleroom for certain sales. Timed auctions are online-only and end with a soft close.
- Buyer's premium: 28% on the first $50,000 of the hammer price, 27% up to $1,000,000, 21% up to $4,000,000 and 15% above that, plus sales tax.
- Payment and pickup: cash is accepted up to $2,500 and credit cards carry a 3.5% fee. Purchases should be paid for and collected within 48 hours; buyers arrange their own shipping.
